Director y productor de teatro británico. Después de su primera producción en Londres en 1931, asumió como director del Shakespeare Repertory Company (
1933–34, 1936–45), que presentó sus obras en los teatros
Old Vic y Sadler's Wells. Su innovadora propuesta escénica al teatro de Shakespeare renovó el interés por el teatro clásico en el s. XX. Además, dirigió óperas como
Peter Grimes (
1946) y
Carmen (1949) y su propia obra,
Top of the Ladder (1950). Fue uno de los fundadores y el primer director artístico del festival de
Stratford en Canadá (1953–57), lo que impulsó el desarrollo del arte teatral en Canadá. También formó y dirigió (
1963–66) el Tyrone Guthrie Theater en Minneapolis.
